About project
Kova is a web-based financial management tool built for small and mid-sized businesses. The goal was to take something traditionally complex — financial tracking — and make it feel as simple as checking your phone. The product needed to work for non-finance people first.
Challenge
Most fintech products are built by finance people for finance people. Kova's users were restaurant owners, freelancers, and small retailers — people who needed clarity, not complexity. The challenge was stripping away jargon and designing a system that surfaced only what mattered at any given moment.
Process
Started with 12 user interviews across three business types. Built an affinity map to identify the three core pain points: invoice anxiety, cash flow blindness, and report overwhelm. From there, created low-fi wireframes, ran two rounds of usability testing, and built a full component library in Figma before moving to high-fidelity screens.
Result
A clean, modular dashboard with a card-based layout that surfaces the most urgent financial information first. Reduced cognitive load by 40% based on usability testing scores. Delivered a full design system with 200+ components, ready for handoff to engineering.
